What are HazMat physicals?

Most HazMat physicals include a health questionnaire and examination by a trained Occupational Medicine physician. Depending on the employees’ job description, nature of the job and hazardous chemicals the employee may come into contact with, extra testing may be required by the physician. Common testing for a HazMat physical includes:

  • Blood samples to check for chemical exposure
  • Urine testing
  • Auditory/Hearing testing
  • Spirometry/Lung function testing
  • Chest X-Ray
  • EKG/Heart function
  • Vaccine Immunization

HazMat Physicals are Critical.

Any employee that is working around hazardous chemicals in the workplace should take a HazMat physical, especially around chemicals that may cause health problems with acute or prolonged exposure. Intended to monitor an employee's health over time, these physicals can identify changes in their health that may be the result of exposure to hazardous chemicals.

For both employer and employee.

It is important to have a HazMat physical upon hire and to follow up annually for the duration of the employee's time with the company.

What determines the types of testing me or my employees need?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides guidelines to physicians, employees, and employers. The pamphlet linked below covers the guidelines for everything from Arsenic to Vinyl Chloride.

Our trained Occupational Medicine physicians are up to date on these guidelines, as well as state and federal regulations. As each situation is unique, our physicians use these guidelines and the many unique factors of your or your employees job to determine testing requirements.
